Parental Rights Prayer Forum

When asked which of the commandments was greatest, Jesus replied "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment." The command continues, "Impress [God's commandments] on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:5-7)

Toward the end of last year I became aware of a legal trend and very real threat to parental rights in America. There is a real and growing trend of the court system to hold itself above the rights of parents concerning the authority to educate, train, and nurture their children, and a real threat of the U.N. Treaty On the Rights of the Child that would replace the parents rights and duty to educate, train, and nurture their children and give it to the U.N.

The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) has "opposed the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child because it would strip parents of much of their authority to educate, train, and nurture their children according to the dictates of their conscience." The Howard Center for Family, Religion, & Society has called the U.N. CRC the "greatest assault ever on parental rights in America." President Obama, on the other hand, has said that it is "embarrassing" that we have not ratified the treaty.

An organization has formed to combat the trend and threat, ParentalRights.org. They are undertaking a petition drive for a Parental Rights constitutional amendment and an awareness campaign. They have produced a documentary called "The Child" to describe the legal trend and threat to parental rights in America.

While ParentalRights.org provides awareness of our political duty, I would like to focus on the importance of marriage and family to the Kingdom and our responsibility to our King, Jesus Christ. I think this is such an important issue that I have made it a primary focus of my Chaplain ministry this year.
